SURGICAL DERMATOLOGY SERVICES
Excisions
Excisions for Low-Risk Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Surgical excision is an effective treatment for low-risk basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. This procedure involves removing the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure all cancerous cells are eliminated.
Electrodessication and Curettage
This technique is used to treat superficial skin lesions, such as certain types of basal cell carcinoma, by scraping away the abnormal tissue and using electric current to destroy any remaining cancer cells.
Wide Local Excision for Melanoma
Melanoma is more rare but more deadly than other forms of skin cancer. It is important for early diagnosis and prompt removal of melanoma. For patients who have a diagnosis of melanoma, we can help you with definitive treatment, and we work with a great team of specialists that can assist as needed.
Lipoma removal
Lipomas are benign tumors made of fat tissue. Although harmless, they can be surgically removed if they cause discomfort or for cosmetic reasons.
CYST REMOval
Cysts, which are non-cancerous, closed pockets of tissue that can contain fluid, pus, or other material, can be removed through a simple surgical procedure. This is typically done to prevent discomfort or infection.
SCAr revision
For patients seeking to improve the appearance of scars from previous surgeries, injuries, or acne, we offer scar revision procedures. These treatments aim to minimize the appearance of scars and restore a more natural skin texture.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The main difference between Mohs surgery and other routine excisional surgeries is that it is done in one day, in stages while you wait for lab results, which are obtained immediately on-site, rather than the tissue sample is sent to a lab for results days later. Finishing the entire process in one visit on top of its 99% cure rate makes it very cost-effective.

Each dermatologic surgery procedure is tailored to the specific condition being treated. For excisions, a local anesthetic is applied, and the lesion or tumor is carefully removed with a margin of healthy tissue. Cysts and lipomas are typically removed through a small incision. Electrodessication and curettage involve scraping away abnormal tissue, followed by the application of an electric current to destroy any remaining cells. Cryosurgical procedures use liquid nitrogen to freeze and eliminate abnormal growths.
-
On the day of your surgery, you will be given local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure. The duration of the surgery varies depending on the complexity of the procedure but is generally completed in under an hour. After the procedure, you will receive instructions on how to care for the treated area, and you can typically go home the same day.
-
Preparation for dermatologic surgery involves a few simple steps. You may be advised to avoid certain medications, such as blood thinners, and to refrain from smoking and alcohol in the days leading up to your surgery. On the day of the procedure, wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area. If possible, arrange for someone to drive you home, especially if the procedure is extensive.
-
Proper wound care is essential to ensure smooth healing and to minimize the risk of infection. After your surgery, you will be given detailed instructions on how to clean and dress the wound. It’s important to follow these instructions closely and to keep the area dry and protected. Avoid activities that might strain or irritate the wound, and attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery.
-
It’s generally advisable to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least a week after your surgery. This allows the treated area to heal properly and reduces the risk of complications, such as bleeding or reopening the wound. Light activities like walking are usually permitted, but you should consult your doctor before resuming your regular workout routine.
-
Traveling immediately after dermatologic surgery is not recommended, particularly for longer trips. Staying close to home allows you to attend follow-up appointments and manage wound care effectively. If you need to travel, discuss your plans with your surgeon to ensure it’s safe to do so and to receive appropriate wound care advice for your trip.

The length of time for dermatologic surgery varies depending on the procedure. Simple excisions, cyst, and lipoma removals typically take less than an hour. Scar revision, electrodessication, and cryosurgical treatments may also be quick but can vary based on the complexity and size of the area being treated. Your surgeon will give you an estimated time frame during your consultation.
“I recently had a cyst removed from my forehead at Valley Dermatology, and I was lucky enough to be treated by Jennifer Williams, PA-C. From start to finish, Jennifer was professional, kind, and incredibly skilled. She explained the entire procedure to me beforehand, which really put my mind at ease. The removal itself was quick and painless, and I was amazed at how precise and gentle Jennifer was. She took great care to ensure that my scar would be minimal, and now, just a short time later, you can barely tell I had anything done! I couldn’t be happier with the results and the level of care I received from Jennifer and the team at Valley Dermatology. Highly recommend!”
